DON’T FORGET!
PLEDGING for 2010
As this January newsletter goes to press, Hennepin members and friends continue to turn in their pledge card for the Operating Budget and Capital Fund. The operating budget is $340,000 short of needed pledges, and the capital fund is $10,000 short. We need everyone in our church community to respond so that our ministries for 2010 can continue as planned. Use the yellow pledge card mailed to you, in the pew pockets, on literature tables at church, OR print your own pledge card from the church website, www.hennepinchurch.org, under the giving menu. If you have not yet returned your pledge card, make it your first resolution of the New Year! May your gratitude guide your giving for 2010.

WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER, AMAZING THINGS CAN HAPPEN
One evening two weeks ago, Kathy Ten Broeke, and Matthew Ayers from Hennepin County’s “Heading Home Hennepin” Project, and Commissioner Gail Dorfman went down to the Currie Avenue Homeless Shelters to check out the numbers of people without shelter. They found the Salvation Army Shelter and Catholic Charities shelter stuffed to capacity and many people left out in the cold. They also found that many of the people using the shelters were disabled. So Ms. Ten Broeke and Ms. Dorfman talked with Rev. Jim Gertmenian, and Rev. Tim Hart-Anderson, members of the Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness (DCEH) to ask if the faith communities, together with the downtown business community could raise $350,000 to hire 10 case managers to help shelter guests find permanent housing and receive ongoing support. The faith communities who are part of the DCEH agreed wholeheartedly to support this project with a goal of raising $70,000. The Downtown Business Community set a goal of raising $280,000 In two weeks time, the faith communities have begun to raise monies to reach the $70,000 goal. Over half of the money has been pledged! The Downtown Businesses are well on their way to reaching their goal of $280,000. The PR firm Padilla Spear Beardsley has agreed to provide pro bono services for a media blitz, starting the week of Christmas. The plan is to have all the funds committed so that the program can begin by the first of February. The Family Housing Fund will serve as the financial agent for the program. All donations will be 100% tax deductible. If you want to make a direct donation to help homeless people find permanent housing, send a check to the Family Housing Fund Partners Fund, 801 Nicollet Mall # 1660 Minneapolis, Mn 55402-5711.

BREAK THE SILENCE – BELIEVE OUT LOUD!
WORKSHOP SATURDAY, JAN. 16 BY C. KRISTIAN CLAUSER HAUMC MEMBER
As many of you know, I was privileged to be part of the Hennepin Church staff for several years. Six years into my tenure, I publicly announced my gender transition from female to male. I wasn’t quite sure what the congregation’s response would be, but I was overjoyed to receive an outpouring of support. A reaction that I didn’t expect was that many folks I had known for ages suddenly “came out” to me for the first time! Elderly parents tearfully shared their love for their lesbian daughter. A young woman laughed as she recounted her gay brother’s penchant for practical jokes. A cousin, co-worker, grandson, friend, sister, nephew, neighbor, mother — I heard story after story of a loved one – or even the story teller themselves who was gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. I was delighted to now know these people more fully, and be able to count them as allies. They had been there the whole time — I just didn’t know it! Perhaps telling my story gave others the permission — or the courage to finally share their own experiences.
Similar situations play out in congregations across the country, and it’s not just those in the pews who are keeping silent about their support for GLBT people. A recent study by Christian Community, entitled Silent and Undecided Friends, found that 68% of United Methodist clergy personally felt homosexual persons should be fully welcomed and accepted without qualification, yet only 7% publicly expressed their welcome and affirmation! As a Reconciling United Methodist, I’m working to increase those percentages. I know firsthand how lonely and isolating it is to think that there’s no place for GLBT people in the family of God. It changed my life when I encountered others who were willing to speak openly about Christ’s inclusive love. That’s why I know in my heart that merely believing GLBT persons should be welcome in our churches is NOT enough. We all need to BELIEVE OUT LOUD! That’s precisely why the Reconciling Ministries Network (rmnetwork.org) has developed the Believe Out Loud campaign. Based on the understanding that people don’t change — until they hear other people’s stories and get to know one another — BOL is designed to equip and empower people to build intentional relationships both among Reconciling allies, and across ideological and theological divides. Participants in BOL workshops nationwide are learning how to be BOLD — living as Believe Out Loud Disciples. Minnesota’s workshop, led by RMN trainer Katie Krumbach, will take place at Hennepin Church from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 16. The training and class materials are offered at no charge, and lunch will be provided. Free childcare is available with advance registration. A freewill offering will be collected. I invite you to be BOLD and join me in becoming a Believe Out Loud Disciple. To learn more or to register for the workshop, please visit bold4mn.eventbrite.com.
IN BETHLEHEM INN: A LIVELY HOLIDAY SHOW
BY OLIVIA DOROW HOVLAND For the past month, the Church of Youth has been a bustling place. Beginning in November, youth in grades 7 through 12 rehearsed lines, built sets, planned advertising and publicity, and organized costumes They worked hard to put together a holiday event complete with a show, musical entertainment, and hot food. The play, titled In Bethlehem Inn, was performed on Saturday, December 5th and Sunday, December 6th to an audience full of children and adults alike. In Bethlehem Inn was a witty retelling of a classic Christmas story, focused on three business partners who owned the inn where Mary and Joseph sought refuge on the night when Jesus was born. The innkeepers and their servants kept up a constant stream of verbal banter while the “guests”, or the audience, were served their dinner. Troublesome interruptions, including a little barnyard rumble with some local shepherds, led up to a beautiful baby boy being born in the inn’s stable. The play was originally written by John Carter but was adapted and directed by Eric Powell Holm, a member of Hennepin Church. Besides
the actors, there were also many youth who did work behind the scenes to keep the night running smoothly. Numerous adult volunteers also pitched in and helped the youth to construct brick walls out of paper, create glittery star ornaments, and design programs, tickets, and fliers. Money made from the performances will be put towards the youth mission trips happening this summer. The junior high youth will be traveling to Madison, WI and the senior high youth will be going to Los Angeles, CA. With the event being as big a success as it was, it might just be made an annual tradition to help ring in the Christmas season with a little theatrical cheer.
NEW AD COUNCIL SCHEDULE TO INCLUDE PROGRAM COMMITTEES, CONGREGATION
BY BOBBIE KELLER To enhance communication among program committees and give congregational members opportunity to keep in touch with each other and church issues, the Administrative Council adopted a new meeting schedule for 2010 on Dec. 3. Instead of the current system, in which the full Ad Council meets every month, in 2010 each monthly meeting will have a different focus. Program area and committee chairs and staff will convene every three months to consider program for the next quarter and promote interaction between committees. Each quarter will also include a potluck event, when congregational members can gather to enjoy hospitality and discuss a designated topic or important church news. The full Ad Council will meet to discuss administrative committee issues the third month of each quarter. The first congregational potluck will take the place of the annual church conference at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Social Hall. Other potlucks will follow in April, July and October.
“Program council” meetings will begin in February and continue in May, August and November. Ad Council members will kick off the new year with their annual retreat at Koinonia Jan. 15-16. In other business, Arvida Steen, area chair for Ministries of Church Community, outlined the many ways “the real heroines and heroes in this area” are reaching out to other congregational members, especially those experiencing tough times. Ad Council members also heard that: • for the first time in a decade, Food Service is self-supporting. The operating budget has subsidized the service in recent years. • Hennepin Church will be a sponsor of the “Speaking of Faith” program on Minnesota Public Radio beginning in December. • with 70 percent of the 2010 budget goal pledged, there was a net increase in pledges and 32 new pledgers. The capital campaign had received about 88 percent of its goal. • the trustees are working on the Border Chapel modification. Plans call for new video equipment to be installed in the Sanctuary in early 2010. Friday Luncheons are in the Social Hall. Call the Church office at 612-871-5303 to reserve your space. Jan. 8: Tour the Bakken Museum, a unique place devoted entirely to things electric. Space limited to 24 people. $5 fee. Sign up now! Jan. 24: (Noon Luncheon) Lori Sturdevant, Hennepin member, previews the 2010 Legislative session and the upcoming gubernatorial race. Feb. 12: Our Annual Valentine’s Party. Four Seasons Barbershop Quartet will entertain. Reservations due by Feb. 7.

THE NETWORK JANUARY EVENT
AN INVITATION TO BECOME A VOICE FOR INJUSTICE NOW!
BY ANN CARLSON, DIGNITY CENTER As Christians, we know that Jesus spoke out about injustice in his society. He ate with people on the margins of society, who were considered “unclean.” He challenged those in power to show compassion for those without power. We are called to do the same today! Dignity Center advocates work with people on the margins of society: people who have lost their housing because they no longer have a job that pays the rent; people who will lose their medical care because of the Governor's un-allotments for General Assistance Medical Care; or people who cannot find affordable housing because it is in such limited supply. Hennepin Church is part of a coalition of 13 downtown congregations who have committed themselves to work together to end homelessness by developing strategies to identify issues related to poverty and homelessness. Each church has been asked to develop a group of people who commit themselves to advocate for changes needed in our society to end homelessness and poverty. I am asking you to join with members of our “sister” congregations to commit to doing advocacy with our state and national legislators on issues related to poverty and homelessness. The Downtown Congregations to End Home-
lessness (DCEH) Advocacy Committee reviews issues and sends out action alerts twice a month by email to people from all the congregations who have committed to do advocacy on behalf of our impoverished brothers and sisters. In each congregation, the Interfaith Action Team members set up a “Take 5” table twice a month after the worship service in the gathering space. Members of the congregation participating in advocacy sign postcards or make phone calls to their state or national legislators on important poverty issues. If you are willing to do advocacy on specific issues related to poverty and homelessness along with others from our sister congregations, please email carlsonaj99@msn.com permitting me to forward your email address to the DCEH Advocacy Committee to receive action alerts. Together we will work to change the conditions that lead to injustice today.

As this January newsletter goes to press, Hennepin members and friends continue to turn in their pledge card for the Operating Budget and Capital Fund. The operating budget is $340,000 short of needed pledges, and the capital fund is $10,000 short. Use the yellow pledge card mailed to you, in the pew pockets, on literature tables at church, OR print your own pledge card from the church website, www.hennepinchurch.org, under the giving menu. Over 150 organizations showed up at the Minneapolis Convention Center on December 8 to provide services to help homeless and impoverished people regain stability. 1700 people showed up to receive help with services such as legal, dental, education and training, hair cuts and ongoing support.
