Confirmation (6th Grade)
Here at Hennepin, we want Confirmation to help youth bridge the gap from childhood to adolescence. For most youth, that "gap" opens when they move from elementary into middle school. It is a time when youth are beginning to question and stretch their understanding of their world and even the boundaries that come with that world. That is why we encourage youth to participate in Confirmation during their 6th Grade year. It is the pivotal year when most youth are making that transition from child to teen. "But how can they possibly be ready?" is a commonly voiced question. Our answer: Confirmation isn't about having all the answers neatly packaged in theologically-sound language; it's about making discoveries, raising questions and being part of a unique faith community.
How we do this:
- Relationships
A core part of our HAUMC Confirmation program is gaining an understanding of what it truly means to be part of a Christian community. Youth will deepen their relationship with God, each other and their faith community Class structure, along with outside field trips and retreats are designed to help these youth deepen their relationship with God, each other and to build connections with their church family. - Responsibility
We want youth to understand that Confirmation isn't just something their parents “make them do." If they choose to be confirmed they have responsibilities to- themselves and to God to continue to participate in exercises that grow and strengthen their faith
- to their church community by being an active member
- and to the larger community by acting out their faith through works of love.
- Rituals
Confirmation is ultimately about publicly affirming the vows made at our baptism and proclaiming our faith to our Christian community. Everything we do during the Confirmation year helps build to that moment because Christian rituals unite the body of Christ and strengthen our faith. This is especially true for youth because they have an innate sense of the importance of rituals and rites of passage. By striving to make Confirmation youth-focused and deeply spiritual we tap into that deeper adolescent yearning to feel connected, to feel loved and to feel supported.
