Labyrinth

In 1995, Hennepin Church became the first church in the Twin Cities to offer a labyrinth for walking prayer and meditation. Modeled after the labyrinth found in Chartres Cathedral in France, our 40 foot canvas labyrinth is available for weekly prayer on Thursdays from 3-9. In addition to this labyrinth the church also has a smaller portable one available for rental by calling the church office 612.871.5303. At Koinonia Retreat Center, we also have a 90 foot labyrinth mowed into the prairie grass. And in August of 2009, we became the home to a beautiful outdoor labyrinth ringed in roses on the south green of our parking lot entrance.

Dr. Lauren Artress of Grace Cathedral in San Fransisco writes "Labyrinths have been known to the human race for over four thousand years. The Chartres labyrinth was laid into the cathedral floor sometime between the Great Fire of 1194 and 1220 when the Fulbert section of the cathedral was completed."

This ancient process of prayerful walking has been a part of the faith tradition, indeed of the Christian tradition for centuries and was rediscovered and brought back to life in the last decade. We invite you to come for a time of prayer at any time on our outdoor labyrinth and on Thursdays beginning in September-May. We also offer worship on the labyrinth in Lent and Advent. Please check the website for dates and times.
