A letter from Deirdre Garvey

Zanmi mwen (My friends) –

With every new piece of information coming out Haiti, our hearts are more distressed. The pictures you have seen on the news reports are coming from the neighborhood immediately surrounding our sister parish of St. Martin’s. We haven’t been able to contact anyone directly to find out how many of our beloved friends are injured or dead, nor do we know the physical damage sustained by the church, the school, the offices, and the homes of our members.

We do know this: The cathedral church of College Bird and the central office of the Methodist District of Port au Prince, is directly adjacent to the prison that collapsed, and St. Martin’s Church is less than a mile from that site. Undoubtedly both are in ruins.

Every one of our Haiti-Hennepin Partnership projects and affiliates is located in Port au Prince. Unlike many churches who do their work in the villages and rural communities, ours is an urban mission. Grace Children’s Hospital, The Methodist Home for the Aged, The Methodist Home for Boys, and several schools that we support are all located in the heart of Port au Prince where the maximum devastation has occurred.

Please support us in sending our love, our prayers, and our wealth.

Deirdre Garvey
Chair, Haiti-Hennepin Partnership
